It is certainly not the first heavy metal educational course, but it is the first one designed for advanced Bachelor’s and Master’s students, given by a PhD Candidate, Paolo Ribaldini, that aims at teaching students how to appreciate Heavy Metal, along with its development, characteristics and subcultures, with emphasis on the Finnish subculture.

This course, “Heavy Metal Music In Contemporary History And Society”, will be available from the Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies at The University of Helsinki, Finland.

Paolo Ribaldini, the course instructor, has two Master’s degrees, one in Philosophy and another in Arts, and is pursuing a PhD in musicology. Paolo gives a short briefing about the course in this video:

But this course is no child play; this is some serious business, as it is given 5 days per week for 4 hours per day over 3 weeks. During this period, the students are supposed to attend local gigs, analyze some music videos, meet up with musicians for seminars, and submit an essay or an exam.
